Considerations in choosing clean room doors

One of the biggest challenges in pharmaceutical cleanroom design is creating doors that are robust yet lightweight, easy to clean and have high hygienic performance. The base materials used for manufacturing determine these properties.

  • The material used for the core of the door must be light in weight and at the same time, have a high flexural strength.
  • Coating materials must allow an easy cleaning, high resistance and durability.

Cleanroom doors are a crucial part as they are responsible for sealing off the controlled environment. According to ISO 14644-1, “in manufacturing or scientific research environments, a cleanroom is an environment with low levels of contamination (dust, microbes, aerosol particles or chemical vapours) and in which other relevant parameters, such as temperature, humidity and pressure, are controlled as required”.

Keys when choosing doors for a clean room

There are several points that are worth considering when choosing pharmaceutical doors. Although it is always convenient to consult with a specialist technician who attends to our specific case, we leave you with 4 basic points:

1. Materials certified according to ISO 14644 and GMP standards

The surfaces of all the elements of a clean room must be completely resistant to water and not produce chemical reactions with the use of soaps, disinfectants and other cleaning products for daily use. On the other hand, the materials must be highly durable and have adequate reaction to fire behaviour. In addition, they must allow good usability and easy maintenance.

SICH Clean Rooms doors comply with ISO standards insofar as, due to their design and materials, they maintain the cleaning standards required in a clean room environment.

2. Smooth and even surface

The design of the SICH Clean Rooms doors is flat on both sides and is flush with the panel. And attention should not only be paid to the surface and materials of the door, but also to the rest of the elements that make it up such as hinges, locks, handles, windows… All of them must be designed and installed in such a way that it allows easy access for the cleaning and, at the same time, prevent the accumulation of dust, dirt or grease.

3. Sufficient watertightness to guarantee sealing

Another of the critical points in the construction of clean environments is to guarantee an optimal seal . Keeping the space free of cross-contamination is crucial to ensure the quality of the plant’s output.

The goal of doors in a clean room, ultimately, is to maintain cleanliness by ensuring a high level of tightness .

SICH Clean Room hinged doors for clean rooms are completely flush and maintain watertightness due to the continuous perimeter seal placed throughout the door frame and another automatic one at the bottom of the door.

Robust, lightweight and easy to clean clean cleanroom doors.

Our door coatings are made from 3mm thick phenolic resin boards (HPL). HPL resin is an ideal material for the construction of clean rooms since, as it lacks porosity, it prevents the proliferation of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.

The core of the SICH Clean Rooms doors is made of 54 mm thick polystyrene, which provides sufficient resistance, lightness and, at the same time, flexibility.

The doors have been specifically designed to prevent the accumulation of dust and allow easy and effective cleaning and disinfection. On the other hand, the material has high durability and resistance to impacts or scratches. Optionally, a stainless steel sheet can be added.

They are fitted with extruded aluminum frames integrated into the panel that guarantee robustness and lightness at the same time. The electrical part (such as the interlocking system, traffic light, button panel or buzzer) is integrated into the whole, maintaining the same concept.

Based on our experience in the design and construction of clean rooms and following current regulations, we have standardized the following free passage sizes for our doors, but they can be manufactured to order in any dimension and colour:

  • 800mm x 2200 for the simple ones.
  • 800mm x 4000mm for the doubles.

Being products made of lightweight materials, not only are transport and assembly easier, but they are also more sustainable by reducing the carbon footprint.

There is the possibility of incorporating optional accessories such as: traffic lights, alarms, emergency bars or anti-panic bars, automatic weather stripping, locks, automatic access controls (fingerprint, non-touch, card, scanner facial…), peepholes and windows with anti-condensation system, electrical and magnetic interlocks, motors, external and hidden door closer arms, protections.
